PHP, Arrays, and json_encode/decode

Dear Experts,

Continuing on from here:

If I using POST or GET to send the following back to the server:

?group_name=group1&item_id=001&item_name=item 1&value=1&qty=1\

How do I make this into an array in PHP so when I use json_encode, the output looks something like this:

"group1" : {
"001" : { "item_name" : "item 1", "value" : 1, "qty" : 1 },
"010" : { "item_name" : "item 2", "value" : 2, "qty" : 2 },
"011" : { "item_name" : "item 3", "value" : 3, "qty" : 3 }
},

"001" : { "item_name" : "item 4", "value" : 1, "qty" : 1 },
"010" : { "item_name" : "item 5", "value" : 2, "qty" : 2 },

when enough values have been POSTed back to the server?
