Thanks for pointing that out. I have updated my code as you suggest but the alert box still doesn't display the message from the server.

1. check and validate the submitted numeric values,
2. post them to the server
3. return and display the AJAX response from the server as an alert window.
4. refresh the opener window
5. close the current window.
The code works fine except that the alert window in the function stateChangedref() displays as a blank message. As soon as I remove the lines "window.opener.location.re

Checking for readyState==4 isn't sufficient.
You should also check for
xmlHttp.status == 200
