How do I test that a username is free in a DB with jQuery's Plugins/Validation

Hello,

I have used jquery.validate.js with great success for testing if text entered in fields is "clean" (sometimes no accents, sometimes only alphanumeric characters, sometimes an answer must have at least six characters).

This part was quite easy. Now, I'm searching to do an ultimate validation, ie, to test if an username is free in a database.

I found a bit of information on <http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Validation/Validator/addMethod>. The equalTo method seems to be a perfect candidate, but I'm stuck at the point where I should get the data from the database, probably with jQuery.getJSON as a glue between my PHP and jQuery, but I have never used it until now and do not understand all its subtilities.

It must be a snippet of three or four lines, but I googled all the web and more and was not able to find the solution.

Any idea?
