jquery fade in and fade out - syntax help please

Hi There,

I was wondering if someone could help out with some image transitions using jquery. I have a slideshow that is automated / manual based on user choice. I need the images to fade in gradually but I cannot seem to get to work. Getting them to fade out kinda works but this is not what i'm after.

Can someone help out with the syntax please? I have some pseudo code below of what i'm after.

if (data.d.myval <= 1 && data.d.myval != 0)
    {
	//automated slidshow first image displayed
    
	when the first image is loaded I need it to fade in gradually
	
    }
    else if (data.d.myval == 0)
    {
	//manual image show when user clicks, slideshow is 
   when the user clicks the button I need it to fade in gradually
 
    }
    else if (data.d.myval != 0 && data.d.myval > 1)
    {
	//automated slidshow subsequent images display
   
	when the subseqent images get loaded they need to fade in gradually.
    }

The image has to be hidden before it can be faded in.
