You would need to do something along the lines of the code below:

Please note though all elements should have a unique ID.

<html>
<head>
    <title>JQuery</title>
</head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="/assets/libraries/jquery.js"></script>
<body>
<form id="form1">
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="one"/>
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="two"/>
</form>
<script language="javascript">

   alert($('input:eq(0)').val())
   alert($('input:eq(1)').val())

</script>
</body>
</html>

Thanks for the reply. But how do I specify the field name? I will be having lot of different array fields. I would like to specifically pick the value of a particular field with its index.

Can you not give it unique names or unique ID's?

If not and you know the index then you can reference multiple by using the following:

<html>
<head>
    <title>JQuery</title>
</head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="/assets/libraries/jquery.js"></script>
<body>
<form id="form1">
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="one"/>
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="two"/>
</form>
<form id="form2">
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="three"/>
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="four"/>
</form>
<script language="javascript">

   alert($('#form1 input:eq(0)').val())
   alert($('#form1 input:eq(1)').val())

   alert($('#form2 input:eq(0)').val())
   alert($('#form2 input:eq(1)').val())

</script>
</body>
</html>

Thanks for the quick reply. My Solution is little bit complicated. There is one form and there will be all sort of INPUT controls both arrays and non arrays in a single form. This is an existing solution and trying to convert to JQUERY. So I need to get the field value by passing in a field name and its index.  Is it possible in JQuery?

by: Tomarse111Posted on 2009-10-23 at 07:18:06ID: 25644666

Ok what about the below then. You can insert the name, which you presumably know, and the index of the object:

Note though that the index starts at 1 not 0.

<html>
<head>
    <title>JQuery</title>
</head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="/assets/libraries/jquery.js"></script>
<body>
<form id="form1">
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="one"/>
    <input name="Text1" type="text" value="two"/>
</form>
<script language="javascript">
    alert($('input[name=Text1]:nth-child(1)').val())
</script>
</body>
</html>

I am getting an alert for the below code. But the alert says "undefinded", I am not getting the field value.

<html>
<head>
    <title>JQuery</title>

    <input id="Text1" type="text" value="two"/>
    <input id="clickMe" type="button" value="Click Me"/>
</form>

<script language="javascript">
    alert($('input[name=Text1]:nth-child(1)').val())
    alert($('input[name=Text1]:nth-child(2)').val())
</script>

<script>
     	$(document).ready(function(){
            $('#clickMe').click(function(){

That's because you have changed the inputs to use ID and not use name. The code will need updating as well. Although as said, really all elements should have a unique ID.

<html>
<head>
    <title>JQuery</title>
   <script type="text/javascript" src="/assets/libraries/jquery.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<form id="form1">

    <input id="Text1" type="text" value="one"/>
    <input id="Text1" type="text" value="two"/>
    <input id="clickMe" type="button" value="Click Me"/>
</form>

<script>
        $(document).ready(function(){
            $('#clickMe').click(function(){
                alert($('#Text1:nth-child(1)').val());
                alert($('#Text1:nth-child(2)').val());
            });
        });
     </script>
</body>
</html>

Hi pcheraleth,

In my case I will just do as shown in my code snippet. When you select via jQuery you will get an JavaScript array like. So, you can access each elements like an array using '[x]' where 'x' is the index, or you can access is via the 'get' method passing as argument the index.

Hope it helps.

var inputs = $('input[name=Text1]');
inputs[0].val(); // This give the value of the first element in the array.
inputs.get(0).val(); // This do the same of the previous line.

As Tomarse111 as already said, HTML should have only one and unique ID in a page. Using the same can bring you other problems.
