Question

JQuery Slide Menu With Fade Effect

Asked by: tedporter

Hi,

I am very new to JQuery and need in a hurry to get a menu working.

The code I have works fine but the part that has me stumped is this. I need when you expand a menu item to have each menu sub item fade in one-by-one, rather than each item at the same time.

Thank you,

Ted.

Hi dachusa,

Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to assist me.

I am having difficulties getting the code to run and I have attached a screen shot of the debugger error to help you to help me. Perhaps when you time, you could investigate.

Try changing the script out to this.  for some reason it was acting like it couldn't find the function, but was still calling it.

     <script type="text/javascript">
	//listIn and listOut by Dachusa
        $(function() {
        	$("li.menu_head").click(function(){
			if($(this).children().is(":hidden")){
				var items = $("ul li", this);var count = items.children().size();var i = -1;var fn = function(){if(i<count){i++;items.eq(i).fadeTo(0,0, function(){$(this).fadeTo(500,1).toggle(800,stop())});setTimeout(fn,300);}};setTimeout(fn,0);
			}else{
				var items = $("ul li", this);var count = items.children().size();var fn = function(){if(count>0){count--;items.eq(count).fadeTo(0,1, function(){$(this).toggle(800).fadeTo(1000,0,stop())});setTimeout(fn,300);}};setTimeout(fn,0);
			}
		});
        });
    </script>

Here you go.  All fixed up and extended the jquery library.

<script src="http://chadhaney.com/jquery/jquery.listSlide.js"></script>
     <script type="text/javascript">
        $(function() {
            $("li.menu_head").click(function() {
                $(this).listSlide(300);
            });
        });
    </script>

Hi Chad,

Very nice - excellent ;¬)

Not wishing to take liberties with your services but please would it be possible for the main menu items to act as my original menu does when they are clicked i.e. when a new item is clicked the open menu closes. To demonstrate I have put our menus up on a page side-by-side so that you can see what I mean.

http://www.sil.uk.com/menudemo.htm - Please note that although your code works in IE8, it does not work in compatibility mode or in IE6 natively. It works fine in Firefox, Netscape, Chrome, Safari and Opera.

Regards,

Ted.

Hi Chad,

Thank you very much for your hard efforts. I would buy you a beer or six but I think geographically we are too far appart ;¬) Keep me posted.

Here is a temp solution.  Will have to finish fixing it when I have more time.

     <script type="text/javascript">
        $(function() {
            $("li.navHeader").click(function() {
                $(this).siblings(":has(ul li:visible)").listSlide("300");
                $(this).listSlide("300");
            });
        });
    </script>

up to you.  I will just update my code on my site and am planning to make it a single string variable so that you could just put  $(this).listSlide("300 close");  or something similar to trigger it.
