JavaScript _is null error  (newbie question) Debugging

I am getting these errors in Firebug and trying to clean this up...

el is null
214 <script type="text/javascript">var el=document.getElementById("custom_http_referer"); el.value = document.location; </script>

document.getElementById("somethingloadlast") is null
282document.getElementById("somethingloadlast").innerHTML;

I am not sure how to solve this...thanks
