Login Cookie

I need a cookie that sets a user's login name upon successful login to "members only" area for period of users session. The login name is used several times by user while in logged in to system member center, which allows user to access user's other records and associated tables. The login name, being the system/user identifer, needs to be called "pulled out" several times during user session. Prefer the most simple naming of js tag , e.g., "http://www.domain.com/usercenter/cgi-bin/search.cgi?template=userinfo.htm&user.login= {{cookie.login_tag}}"

I found a cookie script at: http://www.cookiecentral.com/code/eg1.htm that is similar to what I want to achieve, but need everthing done in background using hidden fields and not bother my users with pop up windows asking for "username". Better example, of my question, is what expert's exchange users experience with the "remember login name" feature.

Further Note: My user's login to member's center with required login name and password, then return page is a simple splash page that say's "Welcome User" and has a continue button to access member center. It is on this splash page, that I want to set the js cookie tag for login name.
