How can I convert this :
 document.getElementById(mm[i] + j).style.background = color;

for NS4 ??

If you are referring to the getElementByID() function, here's something I wrote a while ago that gets you an element by its ID, and works on all major browsers:

function getElement(name) {
     if (document.getElementById) {
          return document.getElementById(name);
     } else if (document.all) {
          return document.all[name];
     } else if (document.layers){
          return document[name];
     }
}

The getElementById part is OK but what about the style.color part ??? That's my real problem

If the element for example is a <span>, make sure you type it as <span style="background: #000000;"></span>.
