favicon.ico ponderings

Hi all,

I am trying to get a customized icon in the address bar of the webserver.

After googling and reading through tens of pages I have found that this
is accomplished with the 'favicon.ico' item in the root of the website
(or specialy referenced with a <link> tag).

My question is how can I get the icon to appear in the address bar even
though the user has NOT bookmarked the page?

I have seen one website do this (as far as I can tell). I am *assuming* it
was done using javascript, but I couldn't find anything in the page source
or any of the numerous referenced scripts, though I might have just missed
it due to my inexperience with javascript.

If anyone knows how to do this please give detailed instructions... also if
this is the wrong area for this question please forgive my ignorance.
