Question

Recording Users Submitted info

Asked by: shadow_linux

I currently, finished creating my website and was wondering how you can record users submitted infomation?  My site has a simple text based chat, but users can just logon on with their desired username and password. Currently I am the mod of the chat, and can't ban members/users from my chat, if I dont have the required information. I was thinking about creating a simple sign up form, and insert a "Open Relay SMTP Sever", and get the users submitted information, to be sent my email account. unfortunately, relay servers are very hard to find, even if their are some currently running, they usually have problems or don't work at all. So if anyone has any suggestions on this topic, on how to record users information, or has a list of working relay servers, please answer to this post.

Thank you (EE)

1. Get webhosting that includes SMTP access rather then depending on somebody failing to secure their own system.
2. Get a form mailter. http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/

Im not really sure, what I need to do?

by: jouwstrmPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:07:29ID: 14515647

you may be able to integrate a database and have your users enter their information and just store it in a table.
not sure what your current setup is like, but do you have your own server with an sql server? or are you going through a hosting company?

by: shadow_linuxPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:26:42ID: 14515687

No no, all I want is a simple sign up page, where users enters their desired login name and password, then the information will be sent to my current email address.

by: jouwstrmPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:36:14ID: 14515700

oh ok, well thats pretty simple.
u'd either have to get a hosting site with smtp access like dorward mentioned.
or setup your own server with smtp routing.

Do you know any, free webhosting servers, that allow SMTP access?

by: jouwstrmPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:39:55ID: 14515704

no i dont know any hosting sites.
I do everything on my own server.

by: jouwstrmPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:41:32ID: 14515710

is your website through a hosting company right now?
or on your own computer?

Well does anyone know any Open Relay SMTP Servers, that actually work?

by: jouwstrmPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:44:19ID: 14515718

I use the SMTP server built in with IIS

by: shadow_linuxPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:45:17ID: 14515722

IIS, not familiar with that term, what is it?

by: jouwstrmPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:48:13ID: 14515730

Internet Information Services, is the main web hosting software under windows.
if you have windows XP Pro or any windows server operating systems, you can install it from the windows cd.
Im not sure if windows XP home is capable of using it or not, dont think so though.

by: shadow_linuxPosted on 2005-07-24 at 19:54:51ID: 14515740

so just use your Windows XP boot cd?

by: dorwardPosted on 2005-07-25 at 01:36:42ID: 14516601

Free services don't generally give access to SMTP - its an invite to being abused by spammers.
Using an open relay is probably illegal - and they get shut down pretty quickly since ISPs hate having hundreds of people complaining about the spam being sent through them.
Windows XP Home does not come with IIS. Windows XP Pro does, but you would have to host your website from the machine your are running XP on.

Best option? Fork out a few quid a month for some basic hosting.
