Question

window.print() error in IE

Asked by: dummie_q

Hey

I am having this strange problem wherein I have a web page which on print button click invokes window.print(). It works well for every case I tested out on my computer. But when the same thing is tried from many of the other pcs,  I get an error saying that IE has encountered a problem and shuts down. I tried most of the fixes suggested on MSDN knowledge base (but for downloading the hotfix) but none of them worked so far.

Has anyone encountered this problem?

Thanks in advance!!

Got code?

by: dummie_qPosted on 2005-10-26 at 11:30:14ID: 15165283

Sure..its just window.print() called inside a function

Dim loButton As TestToolbarButton

                '-- Print
                loButton = New TestToolbarButton(25, TestToolbarButton.ToolBarImageAlignment.Center, "../images/printer.jpg", "width: 24px; height: 24px; cursor: hand;", "Print Table", "printClick()", "Print", "font-size: 7pt;", "clsLabel", TestToolbarButton.ToolBarTextAlignment.Bottom)
                loToolbar.Buttons.Add(loButton)

and heres the printclick function

function printClick()
{
      window.print();
}

Do let me know in case I need to provide any further info...

Thanks

Heres what is generated on html side..I have printed all the other images that get added along with print icon in that row

<td style="text-align: center;"><img src="../images/printer.jpg" alt="Print Table" style="width: 24px; height: 24px; cursor: hand;" onclick="printClick()" /></td>

Thanks

What's the EXACT (word for word) error message and number? Thanks.

by: dummie_qPosted on 2005-10-26 at 13:12:51ID: 15166148

Well..thats the surprising part..its different on different machines..here's the one that I know of..
Error signature:
App Name: iexplore.exe
App Ver: 6.0.2800.1106
Mod Name: mshtml.dll
Mod Version: 6.0.2800.1522
Offset: 00178168

Also, I was thinking that adding the print icon at run time might probably have something to do with this problem. Instead I could try placing it in the page at design time and see how it works out. Will let you know if I try that.

Thanks

Have you reinstalled IE on any of the machines?

by: dummie_qPosted on 2005-10-26 at 13:34:58ID: 15166342

No..none at all

by: dbrittPosted on 2005-10-26 at 13:44:53ID: 15166444

It just doesn't seem like a javascript error. It may have something to do with not having any printers installed and the usual File >> print option wouldn't be enabled (just a guess).

Is that error the only thing it gave you? Nothing like:

Error: 0x123412351 (or whatever)

??

by: dummie_qPosted on 2005-10-27 at 05:12:24ID: 15169808

No nothing like that..for all i know it might be something related to IE..or just the way HTML is getting constructed...will see what I come up with today and let u know.

Thanks

You are opening a new window and then calling window.print() right?

For testing purposes, you can have window.open without any attributes specified like window.open(""); Now it will just target a window with menu bar etc. Then you write the generated HTML into this window object. Now instead of calling window.print(), use File -> Print

See if itz able to.

You can also test using ScriptX ActiveX Control from Meadroid.
