Setting a value using window.opener.form.field.value in FireFox

I have a simple form (child) that is opened by another form (opener) that works perfectly in IE, but not in Mozilla Firefox.

When submitted the child form passes a value back to the opener.  Here’s the JavaScript used to submit the form.

function formOkToSubmit() {
  var memberlist = '';
  for (i=0; i<document.frmemaildistribution.members.length; i++) {
    if (document.frmemaildistribution.members[i].checked) {
      memberlist = memberlist + document.frmemaildistribution.members[i].value + ',';
    }  
  }
  opener.frmemail.memberlist.value = memberlist;
  document.frmemaildistribution.doing.value = 'DONE';
  window.close();
}

The function works perfectly in IE but in Firefox it doesn’t get past
  opener.frmemail.memberlist.value = memberlist;

I tried window.opener.frmemail.memberlist.value = memberlist; as well with the same results.

I added alert(memberlist) inside the for loop and can see that the memberlist is being built properly in firefox.  I moved that alert just outside the for loop and before opener.frmemail.memberlist.value = memberlist; and it fires just fine.  However, when I place the alert just after opener.frmemail.memberlist.value = memberlist;, it does not fire.

Help.  I’m at a loss.
