Question

"Internet Explorer cannot open the site operation aborted" - Error

Asked by: jhstinson

Hi,
 I have this really annoying error. I have this page created in ASP and it uses Javascript a lot too. The problem is few times when i open that page i get a error dialog box with error message:

*****************************

"internet explorer cannot open the site xyz.com
operation aborted "

*****************************

and then i see the blank page, but if i refresh the page it works or if i go back and click on the link again it works.
 The weired part is it works like 7 out of 10 times but 3 times it wont work. I cant seem to find the reason behind this error.

Please advice.
Thanks in advance

Is it only that page?  Try several other pages, both with and without scripts/ASP.  That sounds like your client is not able to find the web server.  That could be caused by a number of things, but being intermittent like that is a little confusing.  Are you working under a heavy load?  Is the server used for other things?

No i dont think that server is being used by other things. The thing is it works most of the time but some times it doesnt work, it gives the error that page cannot be opened.
 I just noticed that  It is happening in other pages too. other pages used to work just fine. I did some researach on it and it seems it is a common problem but no body could find a confirm solution yet.
please reply

I just don't have a lot of help for you.  I've never seen this behavior outside of improperly configured web servers, or improperly configured firewalls.  It could be your connection is flaky.  It could be the web server is flaky.  It could be DNS related (does the problem appear if you use ONLY the IP to connect?).  It could be lost packets.  I just don't have enough information to really give a diagnosis.  Here's a few things you can try, but some are pretty 'extreme':

1) Use the IP for connecting instead of the domain name.  If the problem disappears completely, that implies the problem lies in DNS.
2) Use your logs to verify if a failed connection attempt actually hit the server or not.  Was an error generated server-side?
3) Verify database connectivity (if applicable) for all ASP pages.  Use logging to trap issues.
4) Reinstall the web server.  Does the problem reoccur?
5) Uninstall the web server, and install Apache.  Does the problem reoccur?
6) Reinstall all client system network drivers and associated apps.
7) Try a different browser.
8) Try a different client system.
9) Try a different host for your web server.

One thing I CAN tell you is that the problem is very likely not related to javascript.  JS only has an impact on the client side AFTER the web page has been transmitted to and processed by the client.  I suppose ASP could cause this type of problem if proper error handling is not applied...for example, 3 out 10 times the server cannot hit the database, or gain an exclusive lock, or a myriad of other problems.  If you are refreshing on a site where correct session identification is a necessity, what happens if you 'lose' your session info (timeout..)?

routinet,
 Thanks for the reply. Actually it cannot be database connection problem, if it was then it would display atleast the part of page which comes before the database connection. It seems that it is a bug in IE .
 Thanks

Hi all,
 I managed to fix the problem. It is a bug in IE.
After doing research on Google i found out that IE doesn't allow changing HTML tables via DOM until they are fully rendered.
And i was using an javascript online editor which prepopulates from a table in db everytime u load the page. So i moved the  <script>  where i enter text in to the editor to the end of the HTML .
It works now.

Hope some one will find it useful.
Thansk for your reply
Vish

I say PAQ/Refund.  The question is answered, and will be useful to others.

@jhstinson: can you explain that a bit more, or provide the link to your research?  First I've heard of that, as well, and I'd like to know how that triggers that particular error.  I would think since that javascript is what is causing the problem, the site has already been opened, which is confusing in light of the error message....basically the same idea you mentioned about the database connection possibility.

jhstinson: I am having the same problem with an application passing server side variables to a javscript function  - could you take a look at the script and body and tell me what you see here -

//Javascript that I think may be the problem...

<script language='javascript'>

var bolIsScrollingNewsTickerStopped = false;
var dblTotalNewsItemsHeight = 0;
var dblMaxNewsItemsHeight = 0;
var intScrollSpeed = 25;

var ns4 = (document.layers)? true:false;
var msie = (document.all)? true:false;

//window.onload = myfunction(param);

var arrMessages = new Array();

var arrMessagePixelHeights = new Array()

  function myfunction(param){

    var arrMessages = param.split(";");

    for (i = 0; i < arrMessages.length; i++){

        var pNewsItem = document.createElement("P");
        pNewsItem.style.padding = "5px";
        pNewsItem.style.paddingBottom = "25px";
        pNewsItem.style.color = "#000000";
        pNewsItem.style.fontSize = "9pt";
            pNewsItem.style.fontWeight = "bold";
        pNewsItem.innerHTML = arrMessages[i];

        var divNewsItem = document.createElement("div");
        divNewsItem.style.position = "relative";
        divNewsItem.style.padding = "0px";
        divNewsItem.appendChild(pNewsItem);
