accurately mapping keycodes

Hi all
I am using the following script to capture the keys that a user types into a textbox and i believe the code is cross browser. But one thing i have found is that when i use String.fromCharCode to detect the char of any key besides a-z and the main 0-9 it doesnt accurately map the corresponding keyboard char. Now i know there must be a way of doing it because system like FCK manage to do it.
