how to substitue a word apostrophy (not a text file apostrophy) in a string using javascript?
use replace() function? Thanks.

What do you mean by word apostrophy and text file apostrophy?

not a text file apostrophy, it's coming from the word document, and it's a right single quotation mark, I'm reading text file into the string. Then replace that special character to a text file apostrophy. In vi the character show up as \222. text file apostrophy will show up as '

You can still use monolith's code just hit ALT+0180 when highlighting the text apostrophe instead of the text apostrophe.  You can use the character map to figure out the alt key for giving you these goofy characters.

Much like what ggridley said, what you can try is actually doing a clipboard copy of the character you want replaced and pasting that directly into your code in the replace function.

so you would do:  str.replace("XXX","");

where XXX = the special character you have copied and pasted.
