I have an existing xslt file I need to modify to just output year instead of full date. The following sample of code will output a date in the following format:
Monday, January 01, 2007
I'm using an Ektron CMS smart form and I don't have access to the database so I'm not sure what value is actually being saved in the database but this is the format that the form displays when selecting a date using the built in calendar function.

If you have the date in YYYY-MM-DD form, you should be able to use year-from-date function like so:

I see some issues with your solution
- this function is XSLT2.0 only, I am not aware Ektron includes a XSLT2 processor. Browsers definitely don't support that.
- you need to cast to date explicitely in XSLT2, so your solution is not particularly nicer than using substring and definitely slower (allthough that is not important)
- If we were going for an XSLT2 solution, I would not consider date functions in combination with substring, but would go for a full regex solution... I would never substring or regex a date out of a string and cast to date, for simply getting the date out

Gertone, You're probably right about the 2.0 thing. Here's what's in the first two lines if that's an indication:

I tried your newest piece of code but I am still getting the output of:

well, the stylesheet you use, is not necesarily an indication of what the processor can handle
... but it is still good practice (due to the many differences between the XSLT1 mode of an XSLT2 processor and a real XSLT1 processor)
to process a stylesheet of type XSLT1 with a genuin xslt1 processor

that could mean that the '-' in the date is something else than a simple '-'
seems highly unlikely
can you copy the first '-' from the date and paste it in the substring-before part of the value-of
are you sure the substring-before is in the stylesheet you tested?
