IE7 images preload or....

I have a site that writes a list of data (many data), in every row written i use the same 5 pictures for buttons and so. I have found out by deleting all the img tags, and thereby not writing the pictures, i can get the load time of a specific list down to 6 sec, and with the pictures on it takes 27 sec. 27 sec. is unacceptable. Is there a way to preload the pictures so that the data for the pictures is only downloaded one time and thereafter reused. The pictures are very light, only about 700bytes, but maybe they are needed something like 5000 times on on list, meaning 700*5000bytes. I also found out that there is a big differense if i use IE6 or IE7. IE6 load with pictures only takes about 7sec for the same list, but IE7 takes like i wrote earlyer about 27 sec.

I have tryed to preload via js by this way, but i doesn't work in IE7:

img1.src = "../c_finish/c_finish_ico/flag.gif";

Is there a differense in IE6 and IE7 on how they casch the pictures? Something i can turn on in the E7 browser to preload and casch the pictures? Or is there another way i can preload pictures for IE7, than the one i already tryed? Im desperate so any idea or solution will be very much appriciated.
