Select entire contents of a field when focused by Javascript

I have a javascript function that sets the focus to a particular control and it works just fine for the most part. The problem is that if that field already contains something, I want it to not only focus on that control but to automatically select the text in the control as well. Currently, it focuses that control but the cursor is at the beginning of the line which forces the user to then select all the text manually to type in a new value. How can I focus to a control AND select ALL the text in that control via javascript?
