Javascript Redirect on image button

a click on the regular button (html line 1) works;
a click on the image button (html line 2) DOES NOT work.
Anyone?

might this have something to do with the fact that its an aspx file rather than a straight html?
Cuz I retested it, it worked for me when I save the file a .htm. but not the other way (aspx) around.
Anyone knows why? and most importantly how I can go around it?

It probably has to do with the way the file is "processed", which would appear to be specified based upon the file extension.  I would guess that the extension of aspx might be an indication to the browser that the contents should be handled/processed by the ASP DLL.

An <input> with a type of "image" is a submit button.  If you have an aspx page, it automatically sticks a <form> in the HTML it generates.  The end result is that if you click on an <input type="image"> on as .aspx page, it will submit the form.  If you haven't defined an action for that form, it'll just submit to itself, so the location stuff you do is ignored.

To prevent the function from submitting, you need a return false.  I did it by sticking it in the doit() function itself (see the attached code snippet), and then having the onclick return the output.  You could also have:

  onclick="doit(); return false;"

for the image onclick.  The idea is the same for both.  Hope that helps.

I split the points b/c the 1st comment got me thinking it that the issue was realated to the fact that it as an aspx issue rather than a regular html page's.

For ultimate compatibility since NS2.0 and IE3.2 do not use image and do not use <input type="image"

instead use a link and still return false - added benefit: cursor changes to the correct pointer
