I want to replace it with a more elegant solution that swaps between a close and a replay gif depending on state and whether the hidden div has already been seen by a repeat visitor. I am tearing my hair out. The cookie needs to prevent the div called slidebar from opening if a repest visitor has already seen it slide that day

I now have my cookie being set, it is capping the slide down of the slidebar div, but I now have a new issue. The cookie is preventing the slidebartrigger from showing and hiding slidebar on user initiated clicks.

As a javascript novice I may not be approaching this in the most elegant way but I think if I duplicate the nonuser initiated show hide function with a 2nd identical function that has it's own duplicate div called #slidebartrigger2.SecondSl

Have you checked after the first run, that the cookie is set?
Here in my browser, the cookie is not set.
