The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

For PDA you could look at the screen resolution, or provide a css for media="handheld".
For flash detection there are dozens of non intrusive scripts. One I often use is UFO.js (http://www.bobbyvandersluis.com/ufo/index.html).

Kind regards

Actually for PDA, visitor needs to be directed to another page. Also could you write the actual code which checks the screen resolution and redirects?

Bill

You have this properties:

screen.width- the X dimensions of the screen
screen.height- the Y dimensions of the screen
screen.availWidth - the X dimensions of the screen less OS interface elements
screen.availHeight - the Y dimensions of the screen less OS interface elements
screen.colorDepth - in bits e.g. for 16bit display the value of colorDepth is 16

See also: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Languages/Scripting/JavaScript/Q_10254863.html

So you can have:

<body onload="if(screen.width < 400) {self.location.href="myPDApage.html";}">

The actual value for 400 you need to determine based on which clients you would like to target with your mobile pages. Also note that the css solution will probably work when javascript is not available on your client. Serverside checking would probably be even better when possible.

mplungjan,
that might work for Pocket PC but most of my clients will be using blackberry.

Roonan,
I think yours is the best way. I know a lot of people are disabling Javascript on their blackberry's.

Could you explain a litte bit more? The page we have is flash based let's say
http://www.mydomain.com/flash. I have another directory where I have the files for PDA clients
http://www.mydomain.com/pda

how can I do this using CSS?

Thanks

var agt = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase();

var blackberry4sure = agt.indexOf('blackberry')!=-1;
var smallThingy = agt.indexOf('midp')!=-1;

if (blackberry4sure || smallThingy) {
  alert('You are on a pda')
}

Hi,

With css you don't offer a redirection. You just make sure that your content looks right on the different devices.

You can however hide content and display links to different pages and have users click them manually. You would hide the specific links for the devices the other pages do not apply to.

If you use apache you can set up mod_rewrite

and have

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^BlackBerry
RewriteRule ^index\.html$ /BB/index.html [L]

which will redirect blackberries to /BB/index.html

Okeee, that was a waste of my time...

05.08.2008 at 07:52AM PDT, ID: 21525249
what do you mean?? I used Roonan's solution for the project and of course I gave the points to him.. are you heart broken :)

05.08.2008 at 08:14AM PDT, ID: 21525460
Heartbroken, no. slightly disappointed in not getting anything for my effort to give you alternatives, yes.

If the CSS works for you , then great. I have no experience with media="handheld' so I do not know if all the blackberries support it.

I really do appreciate your time and effort. there is no doubt about it. But as I used his solution, I gave the points to him. Maybe I should have split it, I am sorry.
Actually I havent use the CSS version of his solution, I used JS checking the screen size.

05.08.2008 at 09:42AM PDT, ID: 21526326
That is of course your choice.

I was reading this after posting a JS solution
"I know a lot of people are disabling Javascript on their blackberry's."
so I looked for a server method for you
