From other solutions on EE, discovered I was not correctly escaping final </a> tag - should be <\/a> - and was not correctly using quotes for class type I added- should be as in this example:
document.write ("<a class='select' href='jsfaq.htm'>faq<\/a>"
This validates as XHTML Strict. Always good to use EE - solutions abound.
