making this tiny JS code inobstrusive and CSS dependant

Hello experts,

I want to make this javascript unobtrusive... replace onkeyup="upCase(this);" with class="mainStyle upCaseMarker".  The javascript needs to read the document, and run the function on those having the style "upCaseMarker".

Notice how there are 2 CSS styles in class: "mainStyle" and "upCaseMarker". I am using 2 CSS names because some of my fields already have styles, rewriting them to accommodate this operation would make messy code.

How could I do this?

Note that if it is easier for you to make this using the prototype platform, then I am interested in such a solution. I would just appreciate if you include some explanation for the prototype-specific code. (I want to lean it soon, but I am not there yet.)

Well just do it, erase the javascript call and declare the class for the element. That class will have the text-transform style to set all text to uppercase.

I know how to do it using CSS.

This is a simple JS code sample so I can see (learn) how it is done the unobtrusive way so i can use it on different/ more complex functions on my websites.

Last detail, can you use existing functionality of the prototype framework instead of adding the function getElementsByClassName() ? if yes how?

You can't add a function to Document.prototype in Internet Explorer (refer to Document.prototype issue). You could do it like the code below though:
