REGEX help on $ amount

I have a form field for revenue -- <INPUT size="15" type="text" maxlength="15" name="amount" value="$ ">

People need to be free to put anything they want in this field in any format, so these are all VALID entries --

$ 1M
$ 1 million
2.5 million
$ 1,250,000
1250000
$ 100K
$ 72K
10,000
$12000

But the cut off is 5,000 -- anything less than that, and the test returns false;

With the little REGEX I know it seems an almost impossible task. I cannot use an options list -- it must be an input field

Note that the $ (which is the default in the field to start with), and commas, are optional, but not to be stripped out, at least in the end. If they need to be stripped for testing, the original could be saved in a javascript variable.
