Question

Event Handler

Asked by: jherington

I have started a project where I am interfacing with an ActiveX object which has well defined properties, methods and events. I am following some example code which show how to handle events within javascript - here is an example:

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript" for="Skype" event="CallStatus(Call, Status)">
        debugger;
</script>

This code works perfectly - when I initiate a call from within javascript the above event handler fires just fine (and then fires for each subsequent event within the call cycle). My concern is that VS2008 strongly objects to this format - claiming "Could Not Complete Action" when ever I insert this or a similar event string onto my page. Also VS2008 indicates that the 'for' and 'event' attributes are "not valid for the element script" and finally, Intellisense does not work within this <script></script> tags.

So my question is - Is there a better way to code this event? I would suspect this event syntax I am using above may not be cross-browser compatible (which honestly is not a huge concern for this particular project) but generally I would rather code this in a "more standards compatible (XHTML)" manner.

Thanks!

Thanks for pointing me towards that post, I don't know if my question and the referenced post are related but I am checking into that via the Skype forum...so thank you!

This Expert Exchange post is actually focused on the javascript syntax I posted above. This code seems to be depreciated or somthing and I am generally wanted to know what is a better (XHTML accepted) method of coding for event handlers of ActiveX objects (like that used by Skype or any other ActiveX control provider).

Thanks

Again thank you for the info you provided. I guess this is just a very odd question? Not sure but anyway thank you!

I don't see where a solution to the question was offered. The Skype forum url was not related in any way. I also have the same problem and would like to find the correct syntax for VS2008 and XHTML DOCTYPE.

As jherington asked;
So my question is - Is there a better way to code this event? I would suspect this event syntax I am using above may not be cross-browser compatible (which honestly is not a huge concern for this particular project) but generally I would rather code this in a "more standards compatible (XHTML)" manner.

That is my question too.

I partially agree, while the event syntax does work in IE7 and in fact my question did relate specifically to Skype, I still would like to understand if there is a more standard way to code this. Right now VS2008 sees this as a client script syntax error of some sort.
