I would higly recommend Thickbox...it works very well and I've seen it used in many different websites (including my own)

My questions:
1.) Which is the most commonly used?
2.) Which has the best support, today and presumably in the future?
3.) Which does not need scripting expert knowledge (easy to install and use)?
4.) Which one is light-weight?
5.) Which supports the most important browsers (MSIE, FF...)?
6.) Which is the most powerful/flexible in terms of input formats (images, video...)?
7.) Which is the most advanced in terms of sizing, colors etc.?
Thanks!

I've used Highslide, shadowbox and a prototype / scriptactulous one in:

1. All are very easy to use but without viewing each stats I wouldn't be able to say which is most commonly used. Presumably on their websites they reference big sites which use their product (if any?).
2. Out of the 3 that I have used I would say Highslide has the best support; when I had questions on its use the creator answer them within a day or so. The other two I haven't really needed support to be honest with you.
3. All are very easy to install and come with demo's of how they work
4. Out of the 3 I've used highslide is probably the most leight weight but were talking a between 50KB and 200KB for any of them so nothing major really.
5. They should all work in all browsers. If they don't then you're choosing the wrong one :)
6. Out of the 3 that I have had experience in shadowbox is probably the most flexible as you can literally put anything in it and it will work perfectly. The new version of highslide is meant to do the same but I haven't used that one.
7. Not sure what you mean here. You can style them all to pretty much how you want it to look if thats what you mean?
Some examples I've got are:
Highslide - http://www.orangecactus.co
Lightbox - http://totalaccess.co.uk/S
Of the 3 I have used I would say highslide is the best effect but shadowbox is probably the most flexible for different content.
Hope that helps.
:)
