Question

Show Hide using Form drop down and submitting resulting value.

Asked by: mrslate1

I have the below code which works great for showing or hiding an image. But I need to be able to pass a particular value when the form is submitted, while showing a thumbnail of the selection .How would I go about doing this?

<html>
<head>
     <title>Titled</title>
<script language="JavaScript">
var actDiv;
function chklayer(v) {
  if (actDiv) {
    actDiv.style.display="none";
  }
  if(v>0){
    actDiv = document.getElementById("Layer"+v);
    actDiv.style.display="block";
  }
}
</script>
</head>

<body>
<form name="form1" method="post" action="">
<div style="position:absolute; left:200px; top:150px; width:455px; height:131px; z-index:1;">
  <div id="Layer1" style="display:none;">

  <div id="Layer2" style="display:none;">
    Content 2</div>
  <div id="Layer3" style="display:none;">
    Content 3 </div>
</div>
  <p>&nbsp;</p>
  <p>
    <select name="type" onchange="chklayer(this.value);">

I don't understand your question. What particular value do you want to submit and what do you mean with  thumbnail of the selection ?!

BTW: It's always a good idea not only to have an onchange event in a selection but also an onkeyup event. The onchange is not triggered, when the user tabs or clicks on the selection and uses keys to jump to a particular list item. Just add onkeyup="chklayer(this.value);" to the select tag as well.

Thanks for your comment and tip . My question has changed a bit.

What I am actually trying to do ... I have a form I created that asks two questions in particular. What card you wish selected, and what kind of container you wish to put it in.

So I have figured out the actual code to send the variable, but don't quite know how to create the same function without effecting the first show hide. In other words, When someone makes one choice via Drop Down selection, one image appears and stays visable. when the other  selection is made, the other image appears and stays visible.

Hope this makes sense.

I've cleaned up your code and rewrote the javascript function to be more flexible and dynamic.
The divs for each selection should have a different 'basename'. I left the first batch of images under the basename 'Layer' and set the second batch to the basename 'tablebuy_'. The function now uses three parameters, the first parameter is the basename of the div group, the second remains the index number of the option and the third would be a temporary global variable name. If two selects use the same global variable, then you'll have the flipflop effect you had in your previous script where the selection of one dropdown will clear the selection of the other. If you set different temp names (I've used actDiv and actDiv2 as per your script), then they will not flip but retain their individual states.
