JS alert box on top of existing window, generated from PHP script

I am working on some form validation tests. A simple validation example below checks if an input is blank.

When the test if false, I would like to popup a alert box with the error message and an OK button. My code does this OK now, but it generated a new webpage then shows the popup on topf of the new, blank page.

Can someone show me how to make the popup appear on top of the existing page after my PHP based test?
