Best way to update PHPMYADMIN and retain database info?

Looks like my phpmyadmin is out of date.  How do i SAFELY update it and ensure that no databases are adversely affected?  Thanks!

phpmyadmin is just a PHP driven interface. Updating it should have no bearing on your database servers at all.

Also was having an issue with a table creation bug, so it was recommended that I upgrade to the latest version, which fixes it.  Do you know how I find my current version?  Thanks.
Try looking @ /phpmyadmin/doc/html/index.html

Otherwise it's under the "phpMyAdmin" section (lower right corner) of your phpMyAdmin Home page. Should read something like
Version information: 4.0.5, latest stable version: 4.0.6

Also /phpmyadmin/changelog.php, etc.
