flat file database

What are the steps necessary to use the "tie" command for a flat file database?

I have a file that I want to try and setup as a keyed file using hashes and DB_FILE. However, one thing I haven't been able to find information on or at least, understand adequately is that does the flat file ALREADY had to have been created with the TIE function or do I need to create the DB flat file using the TIE command every time I run the program?

In other words, I can't just use any TEXT related file can I? Can I use the same file multiple times but different days, for instance? If not, do I first have to write a module that creates the DB using the TIE function, then read through the file to assign the key/value pairs.

Then any subsequent PERL programs run on a different day or what have you - I don't have to do that and can just use the TIE function or DB_FILE to get at the data I want based off the key values?

Any assistance would greatly be appreciated.
