Do you know how to write Perl scripts?  If you don't, then you should have someone else give the interview.  How are you going to know if the person that you're interviewing actually knows what their talking about if you don't know Perl yourself?

by: fantasy1001Posted on 2003-10-14 at 18:15:17ID: 9551449

Ok. I think you should ask another perl programmer to assist you in the interview. I am not sure what was the question usually does. It depend on the position whether, programmer, or may be just system analyst.

Unless it's your role in the interview cycle to determine the candidate's specific Perl qualifications, which you are possibly unqualified to do, you should talk to the candidate about more general problem solving and organizational adaptiveness skills: What have they done with Perl in the past? Was there a good reason to use Perl for this task? What's their experience of interfacing Perl to databases (something you can relate to)? You can discuss the future of Perl as a tool for the various application areas it is currently popular in. If you are in the right situation, you can ask them to show you how the Perl debugger works or demonstrate how they find task-specific modules on the net (CPAN).

Rather than try and "cheat" your way through by memorizing a set of posible questions and answers, it's best to be honest and answer the questions as best as you can.  If you don't know the answer or even if you do know but your mind goes blank and can't recall the answer, then say so.  Last week I was being interviewed and was asked to describe some of the Perl projects that I've done.  Unfortunitly, my mind went blank and I could only think of a couple and only a vauge overview of them, so I that's what I explained them, but I also told them where (on the Internet) some examples of my scripts could be found.  Afterwards, I was extreamly  pissed off with myself because I knew I screwed up in the interview and would not get the job.  Believe it or not, I was hired and was later told that it was my honesty in telling them that I didn't know or couldn't remember that convinced them to hire me!  Another employee (friend of mine) told me that if I had tried to "bull ****" my way through the question(s), they would have been able to tell and wouldn't have hired me.

Nothing has happened on this question in over 2 months. It's time for cleanup!

My recommendation, which I will post in the Cleanup topic area, is to
accept answer by harris_c [grade B] (I question the value as a PAQ).
