faster access

this is what i m doing in perl
open(FD, "gunzip -c /u/mirro/access_log.$year$month$day.gz |");
while(<FD>) {
if ($_ =~ /(\S*)\s*-\s*-\s*\[$day\/$months{$month}\/$year:(\d*):(\d*):/) {
$total_different_ip{$2}{$3} += 1;
}
}

the only problem is the file is huge (150MB) and takes 10 secs to execute.

is there a way i can replace this using single shell comman (awk/sed)
not sure if we can do this or not
