The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

OneLiner for embedded comma between double quoted field

Asked by McDougall in Perl Programming Language

Tags: , ,

Hello

I’ve got a data dump from a system for a database.  It is comma delimited with a text qualifier of “ (chr(34), double quote).

Problem:
The name fields have commas!  The name fields are qualified with double quotes so the comma throws off my import.  Plus there is null values i.e.:
“data”,20050101,,,”more data”,,,
which I am having problems with for my perl

So I need to:
* count and display the fields I have that have embedded comma(s) between double quotes “” (chr(34))
* then I’ll need to do a substitution to replace said embedded comma with a space.
* then I’ll use the counter to verify I fixed them all!

Make sense!?

NOTE:  There will be NO non printable characters in my name field, there could be slashes, dots, spaces for sure, numbers, or parenthesis.  Basically what a user would type in the name field for your average input system, if there is such a thing…

EXAMPLES FOR CLARIFICATION

Count and display stuff like this
,"YUMA WORC CENTER, INC.",
,"CANON U.S.A., INC.",
,"ORION, PLANET SOLUTIONS, LLC",

But not:
“,,,,,”  Which represent NULL values for certain fields.

So a full line might be:
“DATA”,20050101,"YUMA WORC CENTER, INC.",20050601,”CO”,,,”145.25
And all I want is:
,"YUMA WORC CENTER, INC.",

I would after properly identifying make a change like this (substitute , with a space):
,"YUMA WORC CENTER, INC.",     BECOMES:
,"YUMA WORC CENTER  INC.",
and
,"CANON U.S.A., INC.",       BECOMES:
,"CANON U.S.A.  INC.",

I’ve tried but it pulls in my null values…
perl -ne "print $1 . \"\n\" if /\"(.*,.*)\"/g" c.txt

Thanks for your help!
