script running multiple times, I need a pid file or other means to keep only one instance

Experts,

     Thank you for taking your time to help.

     I have a script that runs every 30 seconds.  This is usually not an issue.  However I want to make sure that if it has to run longer than 30 seconds another instance of it will not run.

     How can I create a pid file?  Or do some other check to keep this script from running multiple times.
