reading a file in perl into an array

Hi

I want to perform the folowing set of actions. Could you help me to get on the right track?

1. Check the existence of a file

solution

if !( -e $filename) {
..create the file here
}

2. The file if it exists wil be comma delimited entries:

like

id1,val1,id2,val2

i want to be able to read this file into an array so that i can access arrayname{id1}=val1 and so on. How do i do this in perl?

3. I want to be able to check if a new id say id3 exists in this file if it does not i want to update this file and write

id1,val1,id2,val2,id3,val3

Could you help me how this can be done thru perl?
