How would you do the same thing with a text file?
Instead of replacing a string in a binary file I want to replace a string in a text file. I have 50 or so html files that the color code is set for #eaeaea and I want to change it to #d8d8d8. Can this be done without editing each file seperately?

You can use perl's in-place edit option:
perl -i -pe 's/#eaeaea/$d8d8d8/g' file.html
you can specify multiple filenames, or use wildcards:
perl -i -pe 's/#eaeaea/$d8d8d8/g' file1.html file2.html file3.html
perl -i -pe 's/#eaeaea/$d8d8d8/g' *.html
