Perl Script to Read a CSV file column and Update Oracle table

Hi,

I have a csv file with 10 columns.

I need a Perl script solution to  read out the first column of values and use it in an UPDATE statement to an Oracle 10g database Table.
The csv also has a header record that should be ignored.

Does anybody have a sample solution?

csv example:

column1, column2, column3, column4, etc
reca1, reca2, reca3, reca4 etc
recb1, recb2, recb3, recb4, etc
recc1, recc2, recc3, recc4 etc

A simpler solution would be to use an Oracle external table, so you could refer to the CSV file AS a table inside Oracle in a correlated update statement.

My first solution was to load the csv to a table and then execute a stored procedure to do my update and achieved this with a simple shell script, however due to reasons outside of my control, it has to be all processed by perl.

Or the SQL Loader route, which is the traditional way.

Here is a sample of a control file for SQL Loader (Oracle utility) to load in a CSV file. The data is actually included in the ctl file after the BEGINDATA line.


 
You run it like this:

C:\> sqlldr scott/tiger control=raw.ctl
 


--create a controlfile for a raw value
-- raw.ctl (raw column with csv format)
LOAD DATA 
INFILE *
APPEND INTO TABLE stage_table
FIELDS TERMINATED BY "," OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'

Oops just missed your response. Can you process it by Perl, then write it to a secondary output file, then load it? Or do you want to run the updates from Perl?

Sorry, I'm heading to bed. Someone else may pick this up. Here is an approach with DBI.
However, if this file is a full-fledged CSV file with optional quotes and escaped (embedded) commas and quotes, then you might want to use the Perl Text::CSV module instead which will handle real CSV. This first sample simply splits on commas.

I'm getting the idea of it now.  
Is there a typo/syntax error in the last script?  I was getting the following error when it ran:

Scalar found where operator expected at jolt.pl line 11, near "/,/ $line"

        (Missing operator before  $line?)

syntax error at jolt.pl line 11, near "/,/ $line"

Execution of jolt.pl aborted due to compilation errors.

oops, yes too tired at the time I wrote that and didn't test it. I left out a comma.
