The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Download Multiple XML Files, Convert XML to CSV (Pipe Delimited)

Looking for a solution to download multiple xml files to a directory on our (unix based) server, then convert those xml files to csv files (pipe delimited).  Since we would need to download and convert the files each night, some method to execute the script as a nightly cron job would be great.

The url to download one of the xml files would look something like the following.

http://content.example.com/datafeed.html?action=download&campaign=4521&username=name&password=password&format=xml&zipformat=none&fields=extended&programs=1018&categories=all

So to download multiple files, we would have about 40+ urls like the one above.

In the output, we need to have the xml field names inserted at the top of the csv file as field headers, i.e. so things like:

<product_id>
<product_name>

Would be converted to:

product_id|product_name|attributexyz
123|name of product|some other value etc


Attached in the code snippet is an example type of xml file.  The xml fields might vary from xml file to xml file, and sometimes the attributes may have empty/null values, but as long as the output is properly formatted with a pipe delimiter it should be OK.

We might need to watch out for pipe characters occurring inside the xml data.

Perl is probably a suited language as we had some earlier scripts to do similar tasks.  In those cases, we had a text file which contained the list of field headers to extract, and another text file defining the location of each file.  Perhaps a similar approach could be employed here since there are many files to process.
