Call a Perl script from PHP without waiting for return vars

Asked by whmcqueary in Linux Programming, Perl Programming Language, PHP and Databases

I have a php web app, but have a function that would likely take at least a few minutes to run, so I wrote a perl script to run in the background for this.  I would like to call this perl script from my php app, and have php move on while the perl script runs in the background.

What I am having trouble with is the permissions and script location.

How can I have the php call to perl have permissions to run this perl script that is in a different location than the php code?

Should I use exec() or system() in php?

THANKS!
