Debugging httplib when using urllib2

When using urllib2
httplib.HTTPConnection.debuglevel = 1
does not provide debug output as with urllib.
How can I get it when using urllib2?

Find the urllib2.py. Then find the

class AbstractHTTPHandler(BaseHandler):

Here you can see that it defines

    def __init__(self, debuglevel=0):
        self._debuglevel = debuglevel

    def set_http_debuglevel(self, level):
        self._debuglevel = level

If HTTPHandler is used in your case, it is based on AbstractHTTPHandler and you can call the set_http_debuglevel() method.

How do I get at the HTTPHandler ?
For now, I am using only urllib2.urlopen() .

Try the following example:

import urllib2

h = urllib2.HTTPHandler(debuglevel=1)
req = urllib2.Request('http://www.experts-exchange.com/')
resp = h.http_open(req)

for line in resp:
    print repr(line)

h.close()

Thanks, but this requires me to change the code to use the handler explicitly.
Is there no way to add some code without touching the existing downloading code ?

It depends how dirty could be your solution. You can modify the default value of debuglevel inside your local urllib2.py. I personally would not recommend such code intrusions, but it may help occasionally. It is difficult to answer if I do not know the details, motivation, and the code around.

Actually, what you just suggested is very clean and is actually the solution I was looking for.
It is clean because I do not have to mess with the actual code in question. I just use a temporary copy of urllib2.py with the adjusted level, and delete it when I am done.
