Question

urllib2.urlopen throws exception 10061 'Connection Refused'

The following code:

import urllib2
h = urllib2.urlopen("http://www.someurl.com")
txt = h.read()

throws the exception:

urllib2.URLError: <urlopen error (10061, 'Connection refused')>

This works on one computer and not on another.  Any ideas what might be causing this?

From what I can tell, my firewall is allowing HTTP traffic.  I am able to browse to the URL via IE and it comes up fine.  Any other ideas?

Do both computers use the same version of Python?

Are both computers connected to the same network? The reason may be problems with authentication.

You can also copy the ...\python\Lib\urllib2.py into the directory with your code and modify it (add some print commands or so) to make the reasons more visible, debug it or so.

The message probably comes from ...\Lib\socket.py. This way, you shoul search for working with sockets in urllib2.py (the socket module is imported there).

I wasn't able to figure out what was causing the problem but eventually used the urllib classes instead which did what I needed them to.  I appreciate the effort, though.
