Create a document from Python based on template

Hi,

I am trying to create a document from within python based on an opendocument text template. Basically, I want to be able to define many different fields in the template before hand, python fill int he blanks based on data fed to it, and then produce as a pdf or offer to print (that is a extra thing that I would like, though that could be related to another question).

Is there a way to easily do this? Running specificatly Ubuntu.
