What components are required to generate thumbnail jpegs from a MS Word file on Ruby on Rails (Linux)

Hi, I'm trying to come up with a rails app which reads through a word file, excel file, powerpoint file and generates a thumbnail of each page and gets attributes such as A4, Letter paper size.

The platform is on Linux Redhat ES 5.

I reckon that we need to get the APIs for reading the word doc from apps like open office etc. Then convert to a PDF to get the thumbnail.
