The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows XP Pro and Simple File Sharing issue in scripted build

Asked by baobab68_oz in Windows Batch Scripting, Novell Netware Network Software, Windows XP Operating System

I am scripting a new PC build and have hit hit a real snag with Simple File Sharing. (I'll call it SFS). We run a Windows XP Pro, Novell Client and Workstation Manager environment.

We have a particular location in our organisation where we *need* to use SFS, and my predecessor managed to correctly enable it in our build. II'm hitting a brick wall when trying to enable it in this new build. I've been researching and testing for days now.

What I have found is that when our build completes, SFS is disabled, but that the 'Use Simple File Sharing' checkbox in Tools/Folder options of Explorer, shows SFS as being enabled! It's possible to then set up shares etc, but they disappear and SFS is disabled for non-Admin users!

I have a couple of .REG files inherited from my predecessor, which are used in the build and which I will include with this post. After adding those entries to the registry, the workstation is left with a working SFS setup as mentioned above: the Sharing properties of a drive or folder show the Simple File Sharing dialog, but the reg files leave the status of the checkbox in Tools/Folder options of Explorer, as showing that SFS is OFF, when it's actually ON! Also, if anyone then fiddles with that checkbox, it breaks SFS again and it can only be fixed by reapplying the reg files.

The thing that really concerns me though is that although SFS has been enabled by this approach, it only works for accounts in the Administrators group, not for User accounts. Set it up, log off as an Admin and on as User and SFS is not active and the shares have disappeared.

I am not sure what is at play here. As far as I can tell, we don't have any workstation policy being pushed out to workstations. I've found reference to a Local Security Policy called: "Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts", but I am not convinced that that is our issue.

Anybody have any suggestions for me?
