The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Greatest inputted value

Here is a question for work that i am stuck on. Here is what I copied and pasted from the instructions.

Write a script called 5e-fastest that will find the fastest run of a
given distance. It should accept one piece of information as a commandline
parameters: the distance of the run to look for. A sample run might be
as follows:

The fastest run of 26.2 miles was done in 3:03:38.

This is the actual time for the fastest marathon listed in the runs.txt file.
I should be able to enter any distance that I choose on the command-line.
And if I do not enter exactly one command-line parameter it should give me
an error message and show me how to use the program. For instance:

No distance was entered.

#The user inputted value is passed to the FASTESTRUN variable
FASTESTRUN = $input
#If the user inpt is greater than the last recorded fastest run then have it over write the previous fastest run.
if $input > FASTESTRUN then
FASTESTRUN = $input
fi
#If the input variable is blank then tell the user that nothing was entered.
If $input = "" then
echo No input was entered.

Is this really a work question?  It really sounds a lot more like a homework/assignment question.
Accepted Solution

04.25.2008 at 06:35AM PDT, ID: 21439368
Yes, we are learning scripting at work. Anyways, I showed my attempt so I would appreciate some help. I am not here to get in flame wars or be harrassed. If you aren't going to help then why be on experts exchange? That doesn't make sense to me.

What is the relationship between the question and the code snippet?
What is the format of  runs.txt?
Assisted Solution

04.27.2008 at 10:24PM PDT, ID: 21451696
grep $input runs.txt|sort -n

04.28.2008 at 06:47PM PDT, ID: 21458969
I'm not trying to read from the runs file. It is just what you input. So you put in 200 and then it should be the greatest value.

04.29.2008 at 04:58AM PDT, ID: 21461311
> .. you put in 200 ..
you "put in" to what?

04.29.2008 at 07:44AM PDT, ID: 21462738
You would be providing the input so lets say you type in the script name and then the argument of 200, it then should show 200 as the greatest value, and then you type in 201, then it should show 201 as the greatest value. This is what I was trying to do with my above attempt, but it isn't working.

04.29.2008 at 09:25AM PDT, ID: 21463732
> .. lets say you type in the script name and then the argument of 200, it then should show 200 as the greatest value ..
hmm, probably I'm missing the magic here, but therfore you dont need a script, just:

  echo 200

KISS - keep it simple stupid

04.29.2008 at 08:33PM PDT, ID: 21467911
No, no. You would say lets say enter a bunch of entries. Like 500 , 600, 400. You would want it to show 600. I just am stuck on doign this. I thought my attempt above at programming it would work, but it isn't.

04.29.2008 at 10:31PM PDT, ID: 21468287
echo 500 , 600, 400 |tr ' ' '\012'|sort -r |head -1
Assisted Solution

04.30.2008 at 12:29AM PDT, ID: 21468708
No, it has to store it in a variable(s).

04.30.2008 at 12:30AM PDT, ID: 21468713
I'm just trying to store the top 5 inputted values in a variable(s) and have them outputted as a list. Look at my coding to see what I am trying to do.

04.30.2008 at 12:31AM PDT, ID: 21468717

04.30.2008 at 01:56AM PDT, ID: 21469021

# assuming sh or friends:
variable=`echo "$@" |tr ' ' '\012'|sort -r |head -5`

Good Morning Experts,
Due to the circumstances, the former member of EE will be unable to close this question.
I am just going to do a point-split and then move on to other requests.

ahoffmann,
You must have slept through the fireworks.

That Member is gone from EE (based on comments and conduct).

I closed out all of his open questions to prevent their becoming 'abandoned'.

If you have more comments/suggestions to make; in order to clarify a point for future readers, please do so.
