The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

network interface management with a bash script

Tags: bash
hi, i'm currently trying to implement a bash script that will allow me to the following in a server with 3 network cards:

- enable the 1st network card
- perform a task (for example ping 10.0.0.0)
- disable the 1at card
- verify that the card is in fact down
- if yes, enable the 2nd card
- perform a task
- disable the 2nd card
- verify that the card is in fact down
- if yes, enable the 3rd card
- perform a task
- repeat...

basically it;s looping thru all the nics, enabling one at the time, performing a task and moving to the next card.

help (code) with be greatly appreciated,

thanks in advance

# something like following

ipconfig eth0 10.0.0.1 up && ping 10.0.0.2
ipconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 down && ipconfig eth1 10.0.0.1 up && ping 10.0.0.2

great, i'll try it. however i was thinking of something more automated, what happens if all the sudden there is  a new nic? or if remove a nic?
is there a way to do it by taking the number of nics (or their names) at runtime?

thanks

Set the commands inside the following loop? :
1:
2:
3:
4:
for nc in $(ifconfig -l); do
  echo $nc

done

     ping 10.0.0.0
     if ifconfig $nic down

TinTin, you're right. I forgot to check it on Linux. On FreeBsd -l exists.

04.08.2008 at 01:17AM PDT, ID: 21303332
@Tintin

i think this might work, i'm trying it now.
what i don't understand (and excuse my not knowing) is, does this script checks that the previous nic IS down before bringing the next one up?

thanks!

Rank: Guru

Yes, it check if it is down.  What do you want it to do if it doesn't come down?

hints to improve Tintin's suggestion ...

> .. does this script checks that the previous nic IS down before bringing the next one up
no
Also it only checks for historic eth interfaces, and does not see any other (think about WLAN, vserver, VMware, etc. etc.).

To get all NIC currently identifyed by the kernel, use something like:
  ifconfig -a|awk '/^[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9-_,:.]/{print $1}'

To get only interface currently UP, use
  ifconfig -a | awk '/^[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9-_,:.]/{n=$1}($1=="UP"){u[n]=n}END{for(n in u){print u[n]}}'

for the DOWN interfaces simply replace UP by DOWN in above command

Feed that to Tintin for loop ...

@tintin

if it's not down either wait for it or exit with error.
if it is down the continue with the next.

is there a "break" or "continue" like in C?

@ahoffmann
 thanks for the comment, the server only have eth*

In that case, either do

     if ifconfig $nic down
     then
        echo "$nic brought down"
     else
        echo "Problem bring $nic down"
        exit 1
     fi

or if you don't need the messages

ifconfig $nic down || exit $?

hmmm i run into a problem and it's my fault. i should've mention it.
eth2 is the management network, as it is now the script will disable it after the ping.
is there any chance to leave eth2 (the rest stay the same)

sorry... and thanks

04.08.2008 at 06:03AM PDT, ID: 21304745
 ifconfig -a|awk '/^eth2/{next}/^[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9-_,:.]/{print $1}'

04.08.2008 at 12:55PM PDT, ID: 21308962
ahoffmann's is a good generic solution as it doesn't rely on just looking for eth interfaces, otherwise you can do

for nic in $(ifconfig -a|awk '/eth/ {print $1}'|grep -v eth2)

04.13.2008 at 01:16AM PDT, ID: 21344046
thanks both!

the ahoffmann solution fails with an "invalid range" error.
tintin's seems ok

thanks once again

> .. fails with an "invalid range" error.
hmm, sounds like you have a really strange linux distribution not using gawk but traditional awk, then try instead:
  ifconfig -a | awk '/^eth2/{next}/^[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9_,:.-]/{print $1}'
or
  ifconfig -a | awk '/^eth2/{next}/^[a-zA-Z][-a-zA-Z0-9_,:.]/{print $1}'
