... and to set y to the output of 'date' -
y=$(date)
Hi
I want to concatenate a string and a command output in bash i.e.
x = 'hi'
y=date
echo 'x + y'
it should give me the output of date concatenated with the string 'hi'.
Please help

Hi,
you can either use $(cmd) or backtickts `cmd` to get the stdout of a command
e.g.
$(date) and `date`
echo "today is: $(date)"
OUTPUT: today is Thu, Sep 24 2009 11:53am CEST
NOTE:
echo 'today is: $(date)' will NOT resolve in the date, just output as you have written it (single quote)
OUTPUT: today is $(date)
