This may be caused by not having an end-of-line on the last line of the file. One way this can happen is if the file is created in windows and then opened in vi on Unix. I don't know how your original file was created but this may be the problem.

An easy way to fix it is to just save the file after opening it in vi. When you open the file again you won't get this message.

can I use the commend vi -r filename at this moment?

by: jc50967wPosted on 2007-09-14 at 11:19:34ID: 19893878

Binary1,  I have opened the file in vi, and saved it as you described, but it doesn't work in my case. All what i can see is the miscoded syntax which make no sense.

Try

dos2unix FileName

and retry.

by: jc50967wPosted on 2007-09-14 at 11:45:49ID: 19894085

dos2unix commend works for other file, not the one with issue. After does2unix the file, I opened the file in vi, nothing was changed. There are still the miscoded syntax full of screen

by: amit_gPosted on 2007-09-14 at 11:46:28ID: 19894090

Is it a text file?

by: jc50967wPosted on 2007-09-14 at 11:51:21ID: 19894146

Let's review I had done before I got the error message:
1. I modfied few lines which located in bottom of the ksh file
2: I quit vi with :x
3.After a while, when I went back to vi editor, the error message appeared and asked me to hit Return to continue. I saw all original lines miscoded after I hit the enter key.

Then I find now where to modify the file any more.

It is still a textfile. Where did you get this file from?

Do

echo >> YourFileName

and open it again in vi.

Hmm, looks like the file is corrupt. I don't think you can recover it. I hope you have backup somewhere.

What does

cat -v archimedes_ftp_as.ksh

show?

by: jc50967wPosted on 2007-09-14 at 12:11:38ID: 19894334

my original syntax lines are part of followings:

if [ $pos3_ftptype == "MYMETRICS" ]; then
        {
        cd /eis01/ops
        ftp -ivn apsw8101 <<EOFSESSION
        user opsdb oracle

cd /eis01/ops
rm -f OpsCtrl_M_*
}

I think the file crushed, when i cat to a new file, new file are with the miscoded syntax also

by: amit_gPosted on 2007-09-14 at 12:26:20ID: 19894443

The file is corrupt. You have to get it from backup. It can't be repaired.

by: jc50967wPosted on 2007-09-14 at 12:27:28ID: 19894463

I have a two month ago back up file and modified in Notpad before. I tested it, error message is 'can not execute', any thougt. I did dos2Unix for the back up file

by: amit_gPosted on 2007-09-14 at 12:29:05ID: 19894478

Notepad? Are you editing file in Windows and taking it back to Unix machine?

chmod +x fileName

by: jc50967wPosted on 2007-09-14 at 12:34:17ID: 19894518

yes, I editted a backup file two month ago, and then never use it till now

by: amit_gPosted on 2007-09-14 at 12:36:17ID: 19894531

If you do cat -v backupfile and it shows correct code, the only thing missing could be execute permission. Do

chmod +x backupfilenae

and it should execute fine. You will have to do dos2unix again if cat -v shows control chars (^M).

by: jc50967wPosted on 2007-09-14 at 12:58:38ID: 19894731

yes, chmod +x works well, it's executable, although my syntax itself has problem.
Thank you for your help. I have going to close this question and accept your answer.

I will open a new question for a different issue -  a date value as peremeter. I will appreciate very much if I can still get your help
