Just want to rename files with a tricky catch!

I want to right click with say ten files highlighted and have the option provided to rename those ten files in such a way that, whatever they have in common say a lengthy set of text in the middle of all of those filenames will be replaced with something else shorter.

The effect would be like rename
ren "*chapter ?? of my thesis.doc" "*chapter ??.doc"

The thing is I realy just need to know how to setup the RIGHT CLICK to pass a group of file names to VB's COMMAND$ so I might be able to process the renames with more intelligence than the DOS rename and which might also support long filenames.
